Position Overview: Northeast Nutrition is seeking a seasoned Supply Chain Management Professional to join our team as a Senior Purchaser. This role involves strategic management of commodity markets, raw material procurement, and supply chain operations to ensure continuous production and cost efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a keen understanding of market trends, excellent negotiation skills, and the ability to develop forward-looking purchasing strategies.Key Responsibilities:Commodity Markets:Follow published market reports (e.g., CBOT, The Jacobsen, Hammersmith, USDA/Canadian Supply/Demand, DTN Service).Communicate consistently with vendors to understand current and future commodity market trends.Stay abreast of current global affairs and share pertinent information.Be forward-looking and make recommendations based on commodity movements and market indicators.Update the "Raw Material Markets" spreadsheet used in costing.Report on market risk/exposure related to commodity positions (contracts/hedges, etc.).Provide weekly summaries of commodity movements and influencing factors, including FOREX.Ingredient Positions:Collaborate with the Nutritionist to determine raw material and supplies requirements.Manage the supply of raw materials to meet production demands.Oversee various commodity contracts, condition suppliers, and negotiate purchases.Other Responsibilities:Manage supply chain issues to ensure production continuity (trucking, rail, and container freight).Investigate and understand hedging and cross-hedging tools and the associated costs of risk management.Make hedging recommendations where appropriate.Develop an annual forward-looking purchasing strategy.Work with Nutritionist to understand best costing formulations and apply them to the purchasing strategy.Oversee the logistical costs of incoming and outgoing goods and collaborate with Shoreland Transport where appropriate.Understand the future logistic requirements of the business and develop strategies to minimize supply risk.Attend relevant conferences related to feed ingredient procurement.Develop new vendor relationships and maintain/grow existing ones.Develop your purchasing skill set and become accredited.Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance future success and cost management of the business.Work with accounts payable to manage vendor payment terms.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or college diploma in business administration, commerce, economics or supply chain management.Strong understanding of commodity markets and global affairs.Excellent communication and negotiation skills.Ability to make informed recommendations based on market indicators.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other relevant software.Strong organizational and time management skills.Accreditation in purchasing or supply chain management is a plus.Holding a valid Canadian passport considered an asset.Safety:Adherent to Company safety policies and standard operating procedures to ensure personal and team safetyImmediately report any incidents, injury, or damage to property to your supervisor/managerBring any safety issues to the immediate attention of your supervisor/managerWorking Conditions:Office environmentNormal business hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m 1hr lunchPotential to travel for business purposesUse of computer, telephone, copier/scanner, and other office equipmentOther:The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
