The candidate will provide observatory care/surveillance to ensure the safety of a client or group of clients. Clients requiring observation are individuals who are at risk of falling, have a potential for elopement, are non-compliant with therapy and/or show signs of confusion, agitation, dementia, or delirium. The Safety and Security Monitor will not provide observatory care/surveillance for clients who require increased observation due to acute mental health needs. It is the Registered/ Graduate Nurse's responsibility to assess the client(s) and assign the appropriate level of observation. The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.Duties and Responsibilities* Accountable for providing observation/surveillance of client(s) under the direction of a nurse.* Obtains a report at the beginning of the shift on the client(s) behavior and issues related to client safety.* Contributes to the provision of safe client care by providing observation/surveillance of the client(s). At no time are client(s) to be left unattended.* Observes the client(s) behavior and reports any concerns or changes in behavior to the assigned nurse in an accurate and timely manner (e.g. increasing agitation).* Documents client behavior and activity on the patient observation record and submits to assigned nurse at the end of the shift.* Diverts clients from attempting to pull out tubing or attempting to get out of bed by gentle holding of the hand, kind verbal reminders and/or reading to clients.* Collaborates with other members of the team, as appropriate, regarding concerns of clients/families.* Reports to a nurse at the end of the shift.* Maintains strict confidentiality and privacy on all client related issues.* Provides standard safety precautions, such as removing any trip hazards, ensuring bedrails are up where necessary; maintaining tidy client room, and ensuring patients are wearing appropriate footwear (if ambulatory), glasses and hearing aids.* Reports any unsafe conditions to the assigned nurse.* Adheres to workplace Occupational Health and Safety and Infection Control Guidelines.* Participates in staff in-service and continuing education activities.Safety and Security Monitors do not:* Provide personal care or activities of daily living (bathing, bowel and bladder care, lifting, transferring or assisting with ambulation and feeding).* Have accountability for patient care equipment, stretchers, hemovacs, IV, nasogastric tubes, etc.* Engage in counseling, interviewing or health teaching.* Leave the client for any reason until a relief person has been put in place as arranged by the assigned nurse.* Leave the unit without approval of the assigned nurse.* Read or document directly in the patient's chart.Physical Demands:* By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):* Lifts/moves objects up to 10 lbs.* Constant sitting is required, occasionally sits in awkward or cramped positions for extended periods.
