This is supervisory work in the planning, assigning, supervising, reviewing and as required, participating in the work of one or more crews of subordinates engaged in a variety of Parks grounds maintenance and minor construction tasks. Considerable independence of judgement and action are exercised in the day-to-day utilization of personnel and grass division equipment (e.g., 3/4 ton trucks, tractors & related Grass Division implements, front end loaders, riding mowers, 2 ton dump and garbage trucks, trailers etc.). Assists in the preparation of preliminary budget estimates and monitors actual expenditures and advises a supervisor of any anticipated problems. Motivates, allocates, and disciplines members of crews, ensures safety of crews and public by advising and enforcing observance of accident prevention methods and precautions. Trains Parks staff in the safe operation of mobile equipment. Prepares and maintains a variety of related records and reports. Matters of a more complex or policy nature are referred to a supervisor who reviews work performance on the basis of conformance to established standards. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of Grade 12, preferably supplemented by training or courses related to the work plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and equipment used in parks grass grounds maintenance; as well as the hazards and safety precautions applicable to grass maintenance work. Ability to plan, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of subordinate crews. Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports related to the work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and the public. Skill in the use and care of equipment, materials and vehicles used in the work. The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work as required by the department.
