TITLE: Accountant
LOCATION: Thunder Bay, Ont.
REPORT TO: Controller
Staal Irrigation Incorporated was originally founded in 2009. Within the last
decade we have grown into one of Northwestern Ontario's most proven utility
contractors. Being a qualified contractor for such companies as Bell Canada, CN
Rail, CP Rail, Shaw Cable, Telus, City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Telephone and
all major plumbing and electrical contractors within the region. The scope of work
that we perform includes directional drilling, hydro-vac excavation, trenching,
excavation, vibratory plowing, residential cable drops, aerial strand placement,
aerial lashing, cable placing, anchor installation, and fibre splicing.
*Position Description*
We currently have an exciting role for an Accountant to aid the Controller with
administrative tasks and provide support within the Office.
*Position Responsibilities*
Responsible for entering Accounts Payable invoices into the payable system
Accurately uploading invoices to third party sites and completing spend
reports on a regular basis.
Review & verify AP invoices for basic requirements including supporting
documents, coding proper account numbers & ensuring proper approval
steps are followed.
Responsible for Accounts Receivable collection: Sending account statements,
update system with payment status for overdue accounts & regular follow
up.
Provide administrative support to the Controller & assist with other general
accounting duties, data entry, filing, month/year end reporting as required.
Promptly respond to requests from internal and external individuals with
accuracy and a courteous demeanor.
Regular payroll activities including (but not limited to):
Processing weekly payroll for employees,
Approving weekly timesheets such as overtime verification,
Maintaining and verifying payroll reporting records,
Informing employees about payment procedures and benefit
programs,
Calculating pay and benefit entitlements, overtime, and other
payments,
Investigating and resolving payroll issues in a timely and efficient
manner,
Preparing and processing invoices and deposits
Keeping up with union requirements and changes.
Deal with confidential and sensitive issues requiring a high level of
discretion.
*Qualifications*
1-2 years? experience in accounting (bookkeeping or accounts
payable/receivable/payroll)
College/University degree in Administration or Accounting is considered an
asset
Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
Advanced computer software skills including experience in payroll software
(ADP), MS Word, Excel, and QuickBooks Online.
Able to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external
clients.
Financial education or experience within a finance department is considered
an asset.
Experience in contracting industry is considered an asset.
Excellent customer service and communication skills in English (both verbal
and written)
